This year, Barents Spektakel takes care of the local community in every way possible, and we are glad to present our outdoor corona-friendly site-specific projects for our Sør-Varanger audience. We’ll also eventually have some cool digital ways of viewing these works for our online visitors. 😌

Over the past editions, the festival bar has been a major focus point for the local community and visitors alike. This year, the North-7 art group remotely presents the itinerant ghost bar Knife 8 that will travel the Kirkenes streets aiming to metaphorically cut national, geographical, political borders, stereotypes and conventional art schemes. The bar will be in the form of a sledge, and the viewers passing by will be taken by surprise by the construction’s squeaky windows and laughing doors, each of which will hide its own secret, be it a non-alcoholic berry infusion or a video from the artists. ❤️

Another outdoor project that will appear in Kirkenes is the large-scale drawing by artist Ingeborg Annie Lindahl. Mounted as a billboard, Lindahl’s work still appears subdued through her drawings with chalk on blackboards. Theme-wise, the artist focuses on ideas of how we humans adapt to abnormal realities and natural phenomena, as well as on the paradox that humans as a species will try to maintain and persevere, but at the same time we continue to destroy much of the planet.

We will be back with announcements and updates during this week, so stay tuned and be safe! 😍

Men!

In light of the new government guidelines, we would like to emphasize that this year’s Barents Spektakel will only be possible to experience physically for the population of Sør-Varanger. We hope to welcome back travelers from other municipalities and countries in time for next year's festival, but this year our priority is to keep everyone safe. Those living outside Sør-Varanger who still wish to experience Barents Spektakel this year, are highly encouraged to participate digitally through the festival website!

This is the first time in Barents Spektakel history that it will be impossible to cross the border, reach Kirkenes, see the festival projects in person and make new friendships. 😥

However! The Barents Spektakel team would like to change that, and we have therefore come up with various ways to wave to our Russian audience across closed borders. 🥰🤩

The first project is a ‘light telephone’ installation designed by Evgeny Goman and Torbjørn T. Sandnes in collaboration with Barents Bird festival in Murmansk and Pikene på Broen in Kirkenes. The artists will set up a control room and a light instrument in each town, and give the locals a unique way to connect with light. 💥

Another welcoming spot, set to appear in the Pavilion space in central Kirkenes and in the Second school in Nikel, is the ‘lydstua’: a sound installation as well as gathering location for a limited number of locals to see each other, grab a coffee / hot soup and connect — all in a safe way. The project brings together the following group of artists: Judith Hamann, Clara de Asís & Mara Winter Adrián Demoč, Emmanuel Holterbach & Blutwurst, Nadya Yukhnovets, Elina Waage Mikalsen, Tine Surel Lange.

Nikel and Kirkenes will also both host the project ‘Hunger Kitchen’ by Saint-Petersburg artist Anastasia Kizilova.

Murmansk, Nikel and Kirkenes will also bridge borders via Essential Messages from the local communities set to appear in towns in the form of posters and light installations.

Information about events in Arkhangelsk and Petrozavodsk will be released at a later date.

Stay tuned and be safe! ❤️

Over the years, Terminal B has been the Barents Spektakel festival sitting room of sorts, for locals and international visitors alike. This February, we will do our best to honour the long-lasting tradition of welcoming festival guests in Terminal B — with all due precautions — and would like to introduce the projects that are set to take place there. 🥰🥳

The first piece in the venue is by Britt Hennie Halvorsen, who works in both two and three dimensions with the traditional and relatable material of wool. The artist will make use of the entire 2nd floor of Terminal B to create a large scale and Corona-friendly wool installation — a textile soundwork. Visitors will physically enter it and sense the materials, sounds and smells, finding the associations it all brings along.

Artist Matti Aikio, who is currently taking part in a process-based production residency in Kirkenes, will explore issues relating to Sámi communities and the nature policies of nation states in the North. Aikio will present a collection of books, texts, notes, photos, sounds, and video clips within the framework of Barents Spektakel 2021, with Terminal B serving as the venue for the archive.

Taxi Take Away offers a menu consisting of dishes made from local, foraged ingredients - where without leaving the safety of your own home in Kirkenes, you will get an artwork related to the meal of choice delivered to your door. Through stories told via the phone and home deliveries, the audience will get an art experience in hopes of encouraging connection, support and hope for a brighter future in the local community and beyond. At a time when we have to appreciate and make more use of the resources available where we are, Taxi Take Away reminds us of what can be found and how to make use of it. 🍀🍏🌲

We’ll be back with more updates on the unique projects that Barents Spektakel 2021 has to offer, so stay tuned! ❤️

Barents Spektakel 2021 is approaching, and we want YOU to be an essential part of it! 🤝

2020 was the year that turned the world upside down. It made us reflect, reimagine and reevaluate every aspect of life. Simple activities like hiking, cooking and making ‘whipped coffee’ became daily highlights during times of lockdown and quarantine.

The uncertainty of the situation we found ourselves in raised new questions regarding what is ‘necessary’, ‘essential’ and ‘key’ within a range of conversations, contexts and perspectives. How do we find normality during such an abnormal time?

We would love to hear your personal thoughts on this topic and share your perspectives with the public during the festival week!
Share, discuss and relate your answers to fellow citizens of the Barents region, and keep an eye out for these messages as they pop up on various platforms during Barents Spektakel 2021 from February 17-21!

Save the dates: Barents Spektakel går av stabelen 17-21 februar! 🥳🎉

The 17th edition of Barents Spektakel will take a cross-hybrid form closely connected to the theme ‘The Essentials’ — stitching together events for local audiences in Kirkenes, Murmansk, Nikel and Arkhangelsk and connecting them to the wider digital community.

As organisers, we continue to follow all of the advice and recommendations against the spread of the virus, on both the national and the municipality levels. Our priority is to keep everyone safe this year and continue to do something special despite the circumstances.
