Janna Thöle-Juul:
Jeg volder varsomt

Jeg volder varsomt was developed in dialogue with Pikene på Broen for Barents Spektakel 2021.

In the Pasvik valley we find a special ecosystem that is entangled with our own history – from the ice age to the stone age, to the more recent pasts of war, famine, hydropower, as well as the promotion of tourism, conservation, and scientific research that continue into our present.

In the industrial setting of Lokstallen, Janna Thöle-Juul traces a series of personal encounters with trees, presenting a new sculptural work and a series of texts that contemplate notions of movement, intervention, care, roots, violence and tenderness, scars, the earth’s crust, the invisible realm that lies beneath, and the shared nature that bridges our nearby borders.

How do we contemplate an individual pine? Or the forest system it is a part of? How does the context surrounding a living tree change our view towards it? How do we define the ‘room’ that trees create? And what is the effect of making a tree strange in a given context?

«Jeg volder varsomt» is part of a longer-term approach by Thöle-Juul to build kinetic sculptures in partnership with trees, as well as her interest in including the so-called ‘lower’ senses of taste and smell within the exhibition setting.
