The 17th Barents Spektakel will take place on February 17-21, 2021. This year, the festival will become border-crossing quite literally and is set to take place not only in Kirkenes, but also in several cities across the Barents region: in Murmansk and Nikel on February 17-21, and will present a work-in-progress with Petrozavodsk. Last but least, the traditional double concert is set to take place in Arkhangelsk and Kirkenes in May.

In Murmansk, Barents Spektakel is taking place with the support of the local co-organisers, the key regional festival Barents Bird. A few festival projects are set to be presented there: Light Telephone interactive installation, a series of debates  Transborder Café, live feeds of performances from the leading Murmansk artists, as well as the Sunday TIFF Essentials: Films from the North program, developed by Tromsø International Film Festival and Pikene på Broen.

Light Telephone was developed by artists Evgeny Goman and Torbjørn Т. Sandnes in collaboration with Barents Bird in Murmansk and Pikene på Broen in Kirkenes. The artists will hold an interactive experiment by sending light signals across the borders, uniting people and letting creativity flow through colours, patterns, and sequences. The installation will be located in the street near the Murmansk regional research library and in the pedestrian street in Kirkenes.

Apart from Light Telephone, Evgeny Goman and Torbjørn T. Sandnes have developed the unique Stream Cube — a platform for live feeds of performances and talks by Norwegian and Russian artists. The Stream Cube is installed on the central square in Kirkenes.

We know that it is not possible to gather together this year, but maybe we can still find a way to connect?

Transborder Café: program

The traditional Transborder Cafe debates will be held in Kirkenes (Ofelas Arena) and Murmansk (Center for Contemporary Art 21A) and will cover three relevant topics: how to cooperate in the region despite closed borders (in collaboration with Barents Sekretariat), det gode liv (or the sweetness of living) in the North, and what is essential nowadays. Please find the schedule and details on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday debates via links.  All three Transborder Cafe editions will be broadcast online on the festival website and our Facebook page.
